TV and Radio

This page describes how you can fully access digital television including accessing the audio description which is included in about 20% of broadcast television programs. We will later extend this page to include information on accessible digital radio.

  • Goodman s Smart Talk set top box. This TV set top box announces all on-screen information, including programme guides and menus, using synthetic speech. Designed and developed in conjunction with RNIB to provide full access to Freeview® digital TV and radio services. Fully talking Electronic Programme Guide (EPG). You can access programmes with audio description (AD). With Audio Description turned on, significant visual information such as scenery, action, facial expression and body language is described between dialogue. Talking menus enable you to customise all settings. Enlarged text provides easy-to-see menus and programme guides. Includes an ergonomic remote control with raised and well spaced buttons. Remote control button presses are spoken to confirm your choice. There is a dedicated remote control button to stop the speech once you have the information you need. There are dedicated remote control buttons to toggle all speaking and audio description on and off so that sighted family members are not annoyed by these when they are not required. You can use the box together with your DVD player or video recorder. The box is easy to set up with your existing TV and DVD player or video recorder with the supplied SCART cables. It costs about £85.
